Some interesting facts about PNB's costumes...

  • For PNB's 25th Anniversary season the Costume Shop will produce over 300 original costumes.
  • There are 20 tutus in Ballet Imperial. Each tutu took approximately 100 hours to complete.
  • The original Firebird costume alone, for Firebird, entailed over 500 hours of labor.
  • PNB's production of Cinderella required 130 intricately detailed costumes and 30 custom made wigs.
  • Over 1,000 yards of tulle was used for the costumes in Cinderella-that's about one mile of netting.
  • A tiny ant is sewn into the bodice of each of the sixteen Seasons' costumes in Cinderella.
  • There are 190 costumes, with over 700 pieces in all, in PNB's production of Nutcracker.
  • Herr Drosselmeier's coat in Nutcracker weighs over 10 pounds.
  • Fabrics and notions are sought from all over the world.
  • PNB has a dyeing room to dye fabrics to match the designers' requirements.
  • Ballet costumes are stored both at PNB's warehouse and The Phelps Center.
