Pacific Northwest Ballet’s DISCOVER DANCE program provides standards-based dance education to schools that otherwise offer little or no dance instruction. Instruction takes place during the school day and supports classroom goals by integrating other subjects into dance classes. During the course of the program, students have the opportunity to explore dance making and performance by participating in PNB’s DISCOVER DANCE Community Performance. DISCOVER DANCE is free to participating schools.
Each participating school is highly involved in planning and implementation of the program. Teachers are key in planning lessons that relate to classroom curriculum; principals and staff are instrumental in providing communication home to families and coordinating space and in-school opportunities for students. PNB also provides professional development opportunities to participating schools via lesson plans, video and web-based resources, and workshops.
