Director's Choice
March 13–22, 2008

Critics and audiences alike roared their approval for November's Contemporary Classics mixed bill. Director's Choice promises even more of PNB's signature energy and versatility inspired by a quartet of the Artistic Director's favorite innovative dance-makers.

VESPERSPNB Premiere!
Music: Mikel Rouse
Choreography: Ulysses Dove

"Vespers drew tumultuous cheers, and it is easy to see why." The New York Times

Vespers adds a third work from Ulysses Dove to PNB's repertory. Inspired by memories of Dove’s grandmother and the small wooden building where she worshiped, six dancers in wooden chairs assemble and reassemble themselves in brief, bursting and spinning solos, conveying both urgency and restraint.

FÜR ALINAPNB Premiere!
Music: Arvo Pärt
Choreography: Edwaard Liang

Für Alina is an intricate and ingenious pas de deux by former New York City Ballet soloist Edwaard Liang. Though a relationship between the pair is apparent, their level of intimacy remains enigmatic and complements the temper of Arvo Pärt's spare piano solo.

SENSE OF DOUBT
Music: Philip Glass
Choreography: Paul Gibson

"...an intriguing ballet with relationships as truncated and intense as an electronic interchange." The Seattle Times

Sense of Doubt, created by former PNB Principal and current Ballet Master Paul Gibson, is his fourth work for the Company. Gibson's contemporary visualization of two less-familiar pieces by Philip Glass sets a dramatic mood and resonate, cohesive movement on the dancers he knows best. Gibson's other works for PNB include Diversions (1998), Rush (2002) and The Piano Dance (2005).

ONE FLAT THING, REPRODUCEDPNB Premiere
Music: Thom Willems
Choreography: William Forsythe

"...the energy was so high, the dancers were so engaging, the skill-levels so extraordinary, the invention so interesting...an exhilarating piece." —The DanceView Times

In In One Flat Thing, reproduced, Forsythe utilizes an obstacle course as a metaphor for adversity. A work for 14 dancers that moves on, over and around twenty tables, One Flat Thing, reproduced examines the tension between accomplishing a task at all costs or helping someone else to do it—and the human vacillation between compassion and desperation.
