What to Wear to The Nutcracker
As you plan your visit to McCaw Hall this holiday season, you might be wondering, “What should I wear to The Nutcracker?” At Pacific Northwest Ballet, you’ll see people in a variety of outfits, from fabulous gowns to casual pants and sneakers. We encourage you to wear what makes you feel the most confident and comfortable! Here are some looks, inspired by Nutcracker characters, to give you some inspo…
Outfit Formula #1: Drosselmeier
This look, inspired by Clara’s godfather Drosselmeier, is perfect for those looking to be subtly festive. Try an all-black base (you can’t go wrong with slacks and a blazer) with a surprising, colorful accent. Take your outfit to the next level by playing with different textures, like Drosselmeier’s velvety jacket.

Outfit Formula #2: Clara
Take a page out of Clara’s book and keep it classic with a beautiful dress. Here, the fun is in the details. A puffed sleeve, a big bow, or a bold color will elevate your look. And what better way to finish the outfit than with a ballet flat?

Outfit Formula #3: The Prince
The best fashion moment in the ballet might be when the Nutcracker Prince reveals his pink suit! He’s left us feeling inspired by this fun shade, paired perfectly with bright blue and white. Proof that pink looks good on everyone!

Outfit Formula #4: Candy Canes
Take a note from the Candy Canes, and keep it cozy and casual! We love how their look matches from head to toe, elevating an outfit that’s just as comfy as pajamas.

Outfit Formula #5: The Sugar Plum Fairy
Want to feel fabulous? You can’t go wrong with a sparkling outfit, à la the Sugar Plum Fairy. Add some tulle and confectionery colors, and this outfit is tutu sweet, perfect for ballerinas in training.
