Alexandra Danilova (1903-1997) was born and trained in St. Petersburg Russia, where she was a classmate of George Balanchine at the St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet School. A major figure in twentieth-century dance, she performed Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, as well as on Broadway and with many other companies as a guest artist. She taught for many years on the faculty at the School of American Ballet. Madame Danilova was a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1989.
