Timothy John Rushton MBE (born 18 March 1963, England) is a British choreographer widely recognized as one of Northern Europe’s leading figures in contemporary dance. Known for his distinctive fusion of classical ballet technique and modern dance, Rushton has built a career that spans performance, artistic leadership, and award-winning choreography across Europe and beyond.
Rushton trained at The Royal Ballet School in Covent Garden, London, from 1979 to 1982, studying under luminaries including Erik Bruhn, Frederick Ashton, and Kenneth MacMillan. He went on to perform with the Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet (now Birmingham Royal Ballet), Deutsche Oper am Rhein (1982–1986), Malmö City Theatre (1986–1987), and the Royal Danish Ballet (1987–1992). It was during his time with the Royal Danish Ballet that his choreographic ambitions took shape, ultimately leading him to leave performing behind and pursue a new creative path.
His transition proved remarkably successful. In 2001, Rushton was appointed Artistic Director of the Danish Dance Theatre — Copenhagen’s flagship modern dance company and Denmark’s largest — a position he held until 2018. Under his leadership, the company toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, and he cultivated bold interdisciplinary collaborations with writers, visual artists, composers, and designers across a wide range of musical genres.
His choreographic work earned thirteen nominations for Denmark’s prestigious Reumert Prize, with four wins in 1999, 2005, 2006, and 2009. In recognition of his contributions to dance, Rushton was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2011 New Year Honours.
