A partnership between Pacific Northwest Ballet and Spectrum Dance Theatre, REACH is a unique dance workshop program, offered in two independent sessions for students ages 11-15. Participants collaborate with local dance artists to create and perform new pieces of choreography. Each session explores a different dance style and culminates in a performance on stage at McCaw Hall! REACH offers a supportive environment and unique opportunities for students both new to and experienced in dance. All dance experience and ability levels welcome.
Fall Session, 2018

The Fall REACH session, taught by Spectrum dancer Nia-Amina Minor, will draw from a variety of dance techniques. Designed for dancers of all levels, students will learn movement phrases with a focus on the dynamic and performance qualities of those phrases, as well as engaging in improvisation and choreography tasks aimed at developing their own artistic voice.
Nia-Amina Minor is a performer, teaching artist, and screen dance filmmaker from South Los Angeles. She began dancing at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy and received her BA in Communication with a minor in Film and Media Studies from Stanford University. Nia-Amina received her MFA in Dance from the University of California. In addition to performing at RedCat and Jacob’s Pillow, she was a faculty member at Saddleback Community College and Cypress College and a former arts administrator with San Francisco Ballet, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre. Nia-Amina is also the co-founder of a movement-based collective called No)one Art House based in South L.A. This is her second season with Spectrum Dance Theater.

The Winter REACH session with Dammiel Cruz is designed to introduce the technical, choreographic, and performance aspects of dance. Designed for dancers of all levels, this session will take students through a creative process of how dance is learned, created, and then presented to an audience.
Dammiel Cruz is from New York, New York. He studied on full scholarship at the School of American Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet School, and he attended summer courses at Pacific Northwest Ballet School and Boston Ballet. He was the recipient of the Mae. L. Wien Award and Danish American Nationals Cultural Exchange (DANCE) scholarship. Mr. Cruz joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as an apprentice in 2016 and was promoted to corps de ballet later that year.
