Do ballets ever change? In the case of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®, the answer is most certainly Yes! From its roots in the 1892 original to Balanchine’s production for New York City Ballet right up to today at PNB, this beloved classic has been an evolving masterwork. Join Peter Boal, Doug Fullington, Company dancers, and students of PNB School and find out all about it.

Children play an important role in many of PNB’s full-length ballets, a tradition that goes back to Balanchine, Petipa, and beyond. Ballet Master Otto Neubert, Family Matinee Ballet Master Michele Curtis, and students of PNB School rehearse Kent Stowell’s Cinderella and Bruce Wells’ Beauty and the Beast as you observe, followed by a discussion and Q&A.

Ballet classics from the 19^th century figure prominently in today’s repertory, but much has changed over the past 200 years, from technique and training to body types and aesthetics. Audience Education Manager Doug Fullington and PNB School Professional Division students will discuss and demonstrate the challenges and rewards of this unique repertory.

Join Artistic Director Peter Boal and senior artistic and administrative staff for a discussion of PNB’s 2019-2020 season, including the business of ballet acquisition, commissioning, touring, and working with scenery, costumes, and more.

Alastair Macaulay, former chief dance critic of The New York Times, will moderate a roundtable discussion of all things Giselle, featuring scholars and practitioners.

Ballet sees too few women pursuing the art of choreography. PNB School’s first-of-its-kind year-round student choreography class encourages young women to take an early interest in choreography and is made possible through funding support from the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. Observe the process and results in the demonstration led by faculty member Eva Stone and PNB School’s Level VII women.
