Q&A with Principal Dancer Jonathan Batista

What are you most looking forward to for the 50th Anniversary Season?

Definitely looking forward to performing in George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, and Peter Boal’s Giselle alongside Angelica Generosa, and Carmina Burana with Elizabeth Murphy!

What is one role that holds special significance for you?

Albrecht (from Giselle) holds such special significance for me. I was going to perform it with English National Ballet School, but unfortunately, I suffered an injury that held me back from such a debut. Dancing this role will be another teenage dream fulfilled.

What is the best advice that you’ve ever received?

Be yourself.

What challenges are you most proud of overcoming?

Being a Black artist and overcoming the lack of representation in this profession. Also, being able to represent and be a voice for my community through my story, voice, and work as a dancer.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Face your fears, embrace the shame, your time is now, tomorrow.
