Artistic Director’s Notebook: Dawn Patrol, Afternoon of a Faun, Mopey, and Emergence

When Crystal Pite suggested [Emergence] for PNB, she explained that her inspiration came from a book on ants, brains, cities, and software... On opening night in 2013, I wondered how audiences would react as a hot flood light interrupted endless silhouettes of writhing dancers, while the descending curtain signaled a statement made. After seconds of stunned silence, a deafening ovation filled the house. In that moment, we were united in wanting more of Crystal Pite’s singular brilliance. Great art has a way of unifying us and allowing us to see humanity in its most expressive, poignant, and powerful ways.

Q&A with Soloist Price Suddarth

What inspires you outside of the studio? Inside and out of the studio, I am always inspired by my family. My wife Emma (former PNB dancer), our son Milo, and our 12 year old dog O.P. are always surprising me and keeping me on my toes.

No one expects change to ever feel easy. Change doesn’t feel normal. It doesn’t even necessarily feel good. But all that aside, a change can be right. And this one is definitely right for me. It’s with that in heart that I’ve decided to hang up […]

Q&A with dancers from The Intermission Project

“‘Intermission’ implies a period of time spent between. In 2021, most artists find themselves frozen in isolation, caught in between – between what their normal was, the lights, the curtain, the stage and the audience; and what their post-COVID 19 “normal” will look like. A nine-part film project presented in three acts, The […]

Emma Love Suddarth’s picks from the PNB gift shop

We all love SWAG—or “stuff we all get.” When going on a trip to Disney land, everyone feels the need to acquire every Mickey Mouse baseball hat, Pluto backpack, or Minnie Mouse water bottle to stay on theme. It’s a part of the whole experience—the memento to remind us of it. If I look through my […]

Artistic Director’s Notebook: Theme and Variations, Signature, Tarantella, The Moor’s Pavane

By PNB Artistic Director Peter Boal

Pacific Northwest Ballet is a choreographer’s company. In some companies, that term might imply one choreographer creates the bulk of the repertoire. That’s not the case with PNB. We celebrate choreography, devoting […]
